Movie Mondays!


This is the original! The series springs from two of the most successful TV movies up to that time and is an inspiration for a generation of creators. Darrin McGavin carved a place out in the hearts of many scifi and horror fans with his performance as the cynical and jaded Carl Kolchak, a reporter who keeps being the only person in the room recognizing the monsters behind the stories he’s covering. While it might seem a little dated and sedate for today’s audiences, there is a certain nostalgic charm in watching this series. The biggest knock during it’s short lived run was how to stay fresh with a ’creature of the week’ format but, McGavin always managed to make each episode fun (and watchable). I also have to give a big tip of the hat to Simon Oakland, a long time TV veteran who plays Kolchak’s boss, Vincenzo. It wouldn’t have been the same series without him and he plays his part as a crusty, curmudgeonly editor to the hilt. The dynamic between the two male leads played a big part in the show’s success. I loved this show and was pleased to find it stands up well to the test of time; it’s still enormously entertaining. I would venture to say it could be good viewing for a family night (above say the age of seven or eight), just scary enough. Worth checking out without question!
